Midnight, March 1 … Ukrainian War of Nerves — Summary of gazeta.ru commentary
Commentators from gazeta.ru (see earlier posts) seem to believe that full scale Russian armed invasion is unlikely. It would be against Russia’s interests … isolating her internationally, frightening her trading partners in the Commonwealth of independent States, destabilizing the region, etc. More likely Putin is playing a game for limited goals … renewed economic negotiations on favorable terms for Russia, the possibility of some kind of autonomy for Crimea or Crimea +SE Ukraine … showing that he can’t be pushed around.
Several commentators, including those opposed to further intervention, express belief that Russia has a right to intervene to maintain stability in Ukraine, make sure loans are paid back, etc.
With one exception, commentators believe putting regular Russian military units on Ukrainian soil outside Crimea would be catastrophic, including for Russia itself.
