Ukrainian Defense Chief: Russian Troop Build-Up on Frontiers
BBC, reporting on G-7 reaction to Russian occupation of Crimea, notes in passing that the chief of Ukraine’s National Defense and Security Council, Andriy Parubiy, claims that large numbers of Russian troops are massing on Ukrainian borders, and not just in the southeast, near Crimea. There were large military exercises near east Ukraine in late February. Now that these are over, the troops have not been withdrawn.
I am not convinced that Putin’s people do not have even larger ambitions than Crimea here.
BBC and Ukrinform both also report that Ukraine is creating a 7,000 to 20,000 (the sources differ) man “National Guard”, which seems to be aimed largely at curbing attacks by pro-Russian demonstrators on government buildings, infrastructure, etc.
